With the holiday season coming up soon, I have been thinking about the strong relationship between food and our traditional celebration of the holidays. Rather than focus on the usual topic of good/bad foods that are consumed during this time of the year, I’d like to touch on the combination of gratitude and eating.
Most of us have a lot to be thankful for, including the ability to share (obscene amounts of) food with our loved ones. Do we truly take the time to be thankful of this though? Do we try to practice mindful eating? What exactly does that mean anyway?
According to the Center for Mindful Eating, this is a combination of attributes.
Mindful Eating is:
-Allowing yourself to become aware of the positive and nurturing opportunities that are available through food selection and preparation by respecting your own inner wisdom.
-Using all your senses in choosing to eat food that is both satisfying to you and nourishing to your body.
-Acknowledging responses to food (likes, dislikes or neutral) without judgment.
-Becoming aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decisions to begin and end eating.
