Guest Post: Core Nutrition

Today’s post is written by Lisa Kamont, a Charlotte-based health advocate and mother of two.

Through the myriad of choices we are all exposed to every day it is no wonder it can be overwhelming to figure out how to eat right. When faced with health challenges we turn to our diet and wonder, what makes sense for me? Should my diet be vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, soy free, dairy free, egg free, nut free, grain free, non GMO….Seriously? What’s left?! When did it become so difficult to just eat? Why are there so many facebook posts and websites telling me I must cut out this or that if I want to live a healthy lifestyle? Which choices are right for my body? My beliefs? And, which are legitimately going to help me to feel better? As Americans, we all want the ONE magical answer and we want it to be cheap and work in under 5 minutes a day! Through my own personal health journey I was initially overwhelmed with finding the precise protocol that followed all of the rules we are bombarded with daily.

Then, something occurred to me. I need to take a step back, get back to basics, get to the core of what I need, and take….my…..time. This perspective allowed me to breathe. Plus, it sounded a lot more reasonable than living on organic kale and alkaline water! One of the most basic truths I have learned to remember is that our body is a collection of cells. Every cell needs fuel and the right tools to operate correctly and together. This small ‘city’ in our bodies can either succeed providing us with health and vitality, or fail leading to degenerative disease and illness. Like a small city our bodies need a functioning transportation system to take in the good and dispose of the bad. I found that rather than treating symptoms of cellular dysfunction, as our society tends to do, it was more beneficial to get to the root of the problem.

Even when faced with a challenging autoimmune health situation, it has been enlightening to discover the basics of eating right can really be quite simple. I have been able to overcome my health challenges and live pain free with a few critical points in mind that I enjoy sharing with others.

While there is no ONE answer there are very doable options:

– As human beings we all need basic foundational dense nutrients to flourish, and we need them in a form our body can assimilate. With our agricultural soils depleted by 85% (RIO Global Earth Summit), our food supply is scarcely adequate for what our bodies require. Even according to the AMA, we must supplement, and we must find options that are highly absorbable, safe, and nutrient dense. I have found such an option for myself and my family and would not go a day without it.
– Gut health is critical. Making a daily habit of nourishing, gut healing foods is extremely impactful. Have you heard about the bone broth craze? It’s good stuff!
– Drink water, lots and lots of water. Our bodies are 60% water and we need a means of flushing out the toxins we are exposed to daily as well as maintaining strong muscles and healthy skin.
– Get sun, exercise, and rest daily. If you are the Mom of a little one like me you’ll know that the ‘rest’ part doesn’t always happen. Do your best!
– I would venture to guess most of us need some additional type of supplementation depending on our personal situation (vitamin D, probiotics, safe antibacterial/viral remedies, essential oils).
– I would encourage anyone to seek the support of wellness practitioners such as Wellness Coaches, Chiropractors, Acupuncturists and Integrative resources. These experts are often versed in how our bodies operate at a fundamental level and can guide you in your journey of becoming healthy and balanced.

As with anything in life, we get out what we put in. We carefully budget for school, buying a home, utility bills, and retirement. I recall reading a statistic that 2% of Americans budget for health and wellness related activities. For some reason the time and money spent on health (supplements, gym memberships, time to meditate) is often considered an ‘extra’ or a ‘splurge’. However, what is the cost of doing nothing? Will we see that retirement we’ve so faithfully planned ahead for if we don’t indulge in these ‘extras’?

If you are feeling overwhelmed with the journey to a healthier you, I encourage anyone to take a step back, get to the core of what your body needs to heal, be patient along the way, and realize it is worth the time and effort to discover a healthier version of yourself. If we can determine the tools our bodies need to prosper, we can begin to feel better at our core, and ideally stop disease before it starts.

I’m Thankful For You!

As we near the end of 2014, I am reflecting back on what a great year I’ve had both personally and professionally. There are so many things I am grateful for this year. I couldn’t have reached all my goals without you guys, so thank you SO MUCH for attending my classes, promoting my services, and just being all-around awesome people!

Recently a client said, “Maureen, you give me such great support and resources, but the best part is how fun and accessible you make everything!”

So, in 2015, I will continue to support you back with lots of fun, fantastic coaching and teaching. I also have some awesome new plans in the works so keep an eye out.

Healthy Eating and Mindfulness

With the holiday season coming up soon, I have been thinking about the strong relationship between food and our traditional celebration of the holidays. Rather than focus on the usual topic of good/bad foods that are consumed during this time of the year, I’d like to touch on the combination of gratitude and eating.

Most of us have a lot to be thankful for, including the ability to share (obscene amounts of) food with our loved ones. Do we truly take the time to be thankful of this though? Do we try to practice mindful eating? What exactly does that mean anyway?

According to the Center for Mindful Eating, this is a combination of attributes.

Mindful Eating is:

-Allowing yourself to become aware of the positive and nurturing opportunities that are available through food selection and preparation by respecting your own inner wisdom.

-Using all your senses in choosing to eat food that is both satisfying to you and nourishing to your body.

-Acknowledging responses to food (likes, dislikes or neutral) without judgment.

-Becoming aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decisions to begin and end eating.

Charlotte Parent Moms@Work Event

This Autumn has started with lots of great events and seminars. I want to highlight one that I really enjoy and recommend to working moms in the Charlotte Metro area. It is an annual conference called Moms@Work hosted by Charlotte Parent magazine.

Last year I went as an attendee and enjoyed it so much that this year I decided to become a vendor! As a vendor I had a booth and offered a discount on my group services, which was listed in the virtual goody bag.

I loved meeting all the amazing women who were attending the event. Out of the services on my list, the mini-retreat workshops and work-life balance meet-up group seemed to be the biggest hits. Everyone needs more R&R time and support, especially moms.

I’m looking forward to participating in more conferences like this one…and, of course, the next Moms@Work in 2015!

How Did YWC Get Started?

This summer my business has gone from kind-of under the radar to expanding at a rapid pace with new clients, events and partnerships. Since I have added so many new people onto my newsletter list, I think now is a good time to revisit why I started this company.

Over the course of my adult life, I often found myself in the “I need to have/do it all” mentality. I wasn’t even sure what this phrase really meant to me. As if on auto-pilot, it was just what I thought was supposed to be doing. While striving to be the ideal person, live the perfect lifestyle, and be everything to everyone I felt confused if I was on the right path. At that point, I had extensive training in health coaching and behavior change, but was not even using it at my job or in my life most of the time!

Three years ago I was in a big transitional stage with lots of changes (job, family, city, etc.) in my life. While it was strenuous, it also gave me a great opportunity to review my lifestyle, my mindset, and take a big leap toward a dream I’d had for a long time—to start my own business and help others realize their true potential in the world. I wanted to provide a different style of health services that addressed people as a whole individual; creative mind, healthy body and fulfilled soul.

We all face anxiety over so many things because we often times don’t have clarity about our own inner values. How do we make decisions that honor our unique needs and wants? How do we ask for support from others to help us follow through? Are we so confused about our true thought process and feelings that it just paralyzes us in the same cycle of bad habits and sub-par health? These are all questions that I work with my clients to answer.

My approach when working with individuals is straightforward. I am like the close friend that you trust completely with your struggles, dreams, and achievements. I also happen to be a trained expert on work-life balance, maximizing personal opportunities, and how to build a healthy lifestyle in a way that feels authentic to YOU.

In 2015 I have so much fantastic stuff planned. I look forward to seeing you all at my upcoming events and classes (please bring a friend!) and working with some of you individually. Thank you so much for supporting me and my business. Thank you for inviting me to join you on your healthy lifestyle journey.

New Partnerships, Good Resources

Over the past few weeks I have been networking a lot with other Charlotte business owners, mamas, and wellness professionals. Some have been all three of those! I have to say, from my experience, this area has a great support system for those who work in health and wellness or are supportive of entrepreneurs. I’ve met some amazing people. I love the enthusiasm and knowledge that people have here.

Today I want to share two links with you. The first is a website for parents, Hulafrog. It’s a great resource for local events for children and families. I’ve just joined their directory and started listing my events there.

The other website is also for parents, especially moms, called Charlotte Moms Blog. I am working with one of the bloggers, Jackie, to showcase my services. It will be a multi-part series, so keep an eye out for our health coaching adventures!

Walking for Exercise

I am a HUGE fan of walking for exercise. It’s easy, cheap, and can be done just about anyplace. Incorporating more walking into your daily routine can be really easy. As long as you haven’t been told by your physician not to walk too much and aren’t having pain when walking, there are limitless possibilities.

Did you know the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week? If your exercise of choice is walking, that translates into about 7,000 to 8,000 steps a day. Many other health organizations suggest adults walk up to 10,000 steps a day to keep chronic diseases risk low. However, the average US adult only walks 3,000-5,000 steps a day.

The most important goal is to walk more than you were previously, even if you don’t hit the targets suggested above. Any physical activity that is greater than previous levels will help on the way to reaching your health goals.

How do you track your steps? There are many pedometers and electronic tracking devices on the market to help you keep count. They can be bought in most large retail stores, online, and many pharmacies. These are usually easy to use and relatively low maintenance.

How do you make sure you walk enough each day? Besides setting a specific time to talk a walk, try these tips below.

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Park further away from the store and walk across the parking lot.
  • Plan outings with friends and family that involve walking (nature trails, parks, etc.)
  • When on vacation, sign up for walking tours if available.

I am really excited to have a platform where you can keep up with all the exciting events we are doing in the Charlotte Metro Area and beyond. I also will use this space to post health tips, recipes, and more. Keep an eye on this space!

For those of you who are new to Your Wellness Coach, I provide personalized health coaching services for individuals and groups. We partner with organizations and businesses to bring our unique programs to those who looking for health coaching with a multi-faceted approach. The group health series are open to anyone in the community and run throughout the year. Individual coaching is offered in three or six month packages.
